HSK 6 Reading Practice
HSK 6 means you know around 5,000 words. You can read newspapers and modern novels. But classical Chinese? Ancient poetry? That's a different challenge.
These stories are graded to HSK 6 vocabulary. You'll find Pu Songling's supernatural tales, Sun Tzu's Art of War, Tao Yuanming's poetry, and texts from the Song and Ming dynasties. All readable at your level.
Once you're comfortable, switch to the originals. Some are classical Chinese, some are early modern. All of them are worth reading in the language they were written in.

What can you read at HSK 6?
With around 5,000 words, modern Chinese opens up: newspapers, contemporary novels and essays. Classical and pre-modern texts are the next challenge, so we grade those to HSK 6 too. Pu Songling's ghost stories, Sun Tzu, Tao Yuanming's poetry and Song and Ming dynasty writing, all readable at your level before you tackle the originals.
Is HSK 6 enough to read classical Chinese?
Not the originals, no. Classical Chinese uses grammar and characters that modern study never covers, so even fluent HSK 6 readers hit a wall with a Tang poem or the Art of War. That's the point of grading them. You read the actual texts in modern, HSK 6 vocabulary first, then meet the classical original with the meaning already in your head.
What comes after HSK 6?
Reading, mostly. HSK 6 is the top of the old six-level system, and even the newer HSK 7 to 9 band comes down to reading a lot of real Chinese. There's no shortcut wordlist that finishes the job. Move from graded stories to originals, keep meeting new words in context, and let real books take you the rest of the way.
